Cuff Leak Test and Airway Obstruction in Mechanically Ventilated ICU Patients:

A Vanguard Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

WELCOME TO COSMIC TRIAL

Home: Welcome

WHAT IS COSMIC TRIAL?

Based on the success of the COMIC trial with all feasibility criteria met, we are moving forward with the COSMIC trial to assess the changed protocol adherence and recruitment rates.

We aim to examine the efficacy and safety of performing cuff leak test prior to extubating mechanically ventilated critically ill patients with a high chance of laryngeal edema.

The COSMIC trial will be a multicentred, international, parallel-group, and pragmatic vanguard pilot trial.

From COMIC to COSMIC

COMIC Pilot Trial was a pragmatic randomized clinical trial with the goals to determine the feasibility and acceptability of doing a large trial that will examine the clinical and diagnostic utility of cuff leak test in the ICU.

The COSMIC trial was initiated by the results of the COMIC trial.

COMIC Pilot Trial

COMIC Survey was an international project that aimed to determine the variability in practices and beliefs of critical care physicians and respiratory therapists with regards to the diagnostic and clinical utility of cuff leak test in the intensive care unit.

1197 intensivists from 17 countries demonstrated variability in CLT practice. The data from the subgroup of Canadian intensivists shows heterogeneous practices.
